Salt Manufacturing
Harnessing Nature’s Minerals from the Himalayas.
The diagram illustrates the production process of Himalayan pink salt, beginning with hand mining from the ancient Khewra Salt Mine to preserve its natural quality. After crushing and washing to ensure purity, the salt is dried to prevent clumping, followed by packaging in airtight containers to maintain freshness. Each step highlights the meticulous care taken to deliver high-quality pink salt for various uses.
Salt Mining
Himalayan pink salt is primarily sourced from the Khewra Salt Mine in Pakistan, formed from ancient seas over 250 million years ago. The mining process is done by hand, using traditional methods to extract large salt blocks while minimizing environmental impact. Miners carefully extract the salt to preserve its natural structure and quality.
Crushing
After extraction, the salt blocks are transported to processing facilities where they are crushed into various granule sizes. This is done using mechanical crushers that break the salt into fine, medium, or coarse grains, depending on the intended application, such as cooking, seasoning, or decorative purposes.
The crushed salt may undergo a washing process to remove any impurities or dirt. This step is crucial for ensuring the purity of the salt, especially for culinary uses. Some producers choose to leave certain minerals intact, as they contribute to the salt's unique flavor and health benefits.
Washing
Post-washing, the salt is thoroughly dried to eliminate any moisture. This step is essential to prevent clumping and ensure the salt remains free-flowing. Proper drying also helps maintain the salt's quality and extends its shelf life.
Drying
Once dried, the salt is packaged for distribution. It is typically sealed in airtight containers or bags to preserve freshness and prevent moisture absorption. Packaging may vary based on the product type, whether it's fine salt for cooking, larger crystals for seasoning, or decorative salt lamps.
